From August to October, recorded telephone messages will provide information about the location of stag stalking activities in various parts of the Scottish Highlands and Islands.
Messages will indicate where stalking is taking place and which walking routes will be unlikely to affect stalking, as well as giving a forecast of stalking activity over the next few days. Recorded messages are updated by 8am each day, and calls are charged at normal rates. It may help to have a map beside you when you call the Hillphone number.
The Hillphones service is supported by the Access Forum, and has been organised by the Mountaineering Council of Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage and the participating estates. The service aims to improve communications between stalkers and hillwalking.
Please be aware that stag stalking takes place elsewhere in Scotland, and not just in the Hillphone areas. Also, whilst the stag stalking season finishes on October 20, the hind cull continues until February 15.
There is no stalking on Sundays.
Throughout the Highlands, walkers can help to minimise disturbance during the stalking season by following the main established hill paths, prominent ridges and spurs on the hills, especially in descent, main routes through glens and principal watercourses when descending open hillsides.
